Welcome to Highlands Fire Department

Highlands Fire Department is an all Volunteer Organization that proudly protects an estimated 5,000 people living in an area of One square mile. Located in Highlands, NJ we operate out of one station that protects a primarily residential area. As of now our department is 50 members strong, but is always looking to grow. The department was founded in 1900 and is composed of two companies Columbia Hose Company No. 1 & Star Hook and Ladder Company No. 2. The town is a waterfront community with a major highway running through it. We answer structure, brush, car and boat fire calls along with motor vehicle extrication.

Life Member Armie Armstrong Passes

Friday, May 11, 2012  William T. "Armie" Armstrong

AGE: 62 • Belford

William T. "Armie" Armstrong, 62 years young, left us too soon on Friday, May 11, 2012. He was born in Youngstown, OH and lived in Highlands, NJ before moving to Belford, NJ 26 years ago. Before retiring in 2007, he worked as a Toll Collector and in the Road Maintenance Department for N.J. Turnpike Authority for 35 years. He was a Life Member of the Highlands Fire Department, Honorary Member of Belford Engine Fire Company, Member of the American Legion Post 338 Leonardo, and Member of the Middletown F.O.P. Lodge #53. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard (1968-1972).

Armie was preceded in death by his parents, William and Marcella Armstrong. Surviving are: his loving, devoted wife of 40 years, Cheryl Schroeck Armstrong of Belford; three daughters and sons-in-law: Michelle and Robert Fairhurst of Port Monmouth; Tricia and Adam Fairhurst of Port Monmouth; Lindsay and Todd Smith of Howell; one sister; three brothers; seven grandchildren - Sydney, Hayden, Robyn, Kyle, Ryan, Haley and Kelly.

Armie was best known for his eagerness to always lend a hand. He was a jack of all trades handyman and loved to help others whenever possible. He loved cooking and was always trying new recipes. He talked to anyone and everyone and always left a lasting impression. He absolutely loved a good time and could not start the day without a little humor from his daily jokes. He was happiest when surrounded by loved ones and would hum and whistle endlessly. When recently asked, "Pop, why do you whistle all the time?" he smiled and simply said, "Because I'm happy." Every single thing about Armie will be sorely missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.

A Memorial Gathering celebrating his life will be held Monday, May 14th, 2012 between 6 and 9 pm at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, Eastern Division 2310 Route 34, Suite 1D, Manasquan, NJ 08736.

And as Armie would always say, " DONE DEAL".
